Alcoholism, also known as alcohol use disorder (AUD), is a chronic disease characterized by an inability to control drinking despite adverse consequences. It's not always easy to identify—especially in its early stages—but recognizing the signs of alcoholism can help individuals and their loved ones seek help before the condition worsens. While occasional drinking is common and socially acceptable in many cultures, persistent and problematic drinking patterns are often red flags of a deeper issue.
